Which toner (lotion) is the best for me?

Environ has 5 toners/ lotions to choose. Which one is the best for my skin?

AVST Moisturising Toner (200ml) - £34

This toner works in synergy with Environ's face cream to assist better penetration of vitamins and other active ingredients - with a special ingredient 'Transcutol". Also it is mildly exfoliating and balancing pH with lactic acid. Great for all types of skin.

How to use: Use as a general toner, am & pm after cleaning the face.

AVST Hydrating Lotion (200ml) - £39.95

It is a treatment lotion can be used for both face & body. It contains lactic acid which exerts more properties of acid than AVST Moisturising Toner (due to higher amount). It is great for photo damage (rough surface etc), post acne scar, pigmentation, congestion/ acne and dry skin. Also it really works for dry and rough skin of heels and knees! It is a bit sticky texture and may cause a slight tingling sensation (to be aware). It is a lotion but can be replaced with AVST Moisturising Toner for both toner & lotion effect.

Lactic acid assists:

• Natural exfoliation
• Smoothes and softens 
• Hydrating
• Brightening
• Inhibits melanin production
• Increases penetration of vitamin A

How to use: Use with cotton pads. Starting with once a day then gradually increase to twice a day. It can be used continuously. Can be used throughout the year.

C-Quence Toner (200ml) - £ 45

It has a name 'toner' but it is really a treatment lotion. Like AVST Moisturising Toner, it assists a better penetration of active ingredient (Transcutol), but also contains peptide (Matrixyl) for a better collagen and elastin production. I have few fans of this item for a long period of time. 

Clarifying Lotion (100ml) - £34

This is a special lotion for hyper-pigmentation used only for the affected area (thus you need to use a toner for a whole face after cleansing before this lotion). Pigmentation is sometime not easy one to treat, but this lotion has a really good feedback! Niacinamide (vitamin B3) draws out pigmentation from melanocytes, and sepiwhite manage and control the amount of melanin. It has also transcutol to enhance the penetration of Environ face cream. 

Caution: As this lotion initially draw out the pigmentation, it will worsen the colour for a little white. It may cause a slight tingling sensation while application. 

How to use: It is better that your skin is already exposed to vitamin A for a little while before start using if you have a sensitive skin. Apply the lotion with fingertips on the individual areas, both am & pm. 

Contra indications: Roaccutane users, Retin A, irritated skin 

Alpha Toner Forte (200ml) - £ 39.95

It contains stronger acid than AVST Moisturising Toner, it is recommended for rough/ photo damage, textural problem and acne skin. It contains glycolic acid (not lactic acid).

Glycolic acid assists:

• Promoting exfolication
• Refine and smooth
• Supports acid mantle of the skin
• Minimise bacterial growth
• Helps penetration of vitamins

How to use: Start using after your skin is acclimated to mild level of vitamin A (lower level of Environ face cream). Use am & pm as a toner with cotton pads. Discontinue use once the result is achieved and replace with an appropriate toner.

Contra indications: Sensitive, irritated skin, Roaccutane users, caution with Retin A (consult the therapist)

What happend after I reached to AVST5 cream?

There are questions what can we do after reaching the highest level of Environ AVST cream (AVST5). You can stay at AVST5 forever (and add some additional serum from intensive range from time to time), or step up even higher. Some people are happy with keeping AVST5 but others want to achieve more. You can add C-Quence Gel (level 1-4) or Retinol (level 1-3) to AVST5. My clients said they are extremely happy by adding those items. Our need for vitamin A to repair DNA in the skin cells increase with ageing, so it is never too much to give more vitamin A. Do not worry, Environ's vitamin A is safe to use in high concentration if you step up the quantity properly. It does not thin your skin like some medical vitamin A cream. Read here too.

Environ, 24 years since established

Environ is 24 years old since the company commenced their business in 1990. Its launch in UK was a bit later and reputation grew rather slowly by a word of mouth and by recommendation, so many people are surprised that it had been around quite a long time. I think, in a way, this was a better way to establish their own stance in the beauty market as they are really one of the true cosmeceutical brands. The founder Dr. Fernandes's topical endeavour had started back in 1983, making vitamin creams in his kitchen after tragic incidence of losing his young skin cancer patients. Initially he focused on vitamin A's effect on skin cancer prevention, which was then extended to anti-ageing of skin. BPA free canned food??

BPA free bottles are now quite common in baby products, but do you know that BPA exposure is widely spread to all of us? In fact, 93% of 2,517 people in US's national survey found detectable level of BPA in their urine, according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).


Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical produced in large quantities for use primarily in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. The main source of BPA is from diet via canned foods, consumer products with polycarbonate tableware, plastic food containers, water bottles and baby bottles. The degree to which BPA leaches from polycarbonate container/ bottle into food may depend on the temperature, acidity, salt quantity, fat quantity of contained food. Baby and toddlers are said to be more sensitive to BPA, thus BPA free bottles can be found everywhere now. It is said that higher the BPA level in pregnant women's urine, more tendency to have aggressive, anxious and hyperactive children compared with women with lower BPA.


However we should also consider to reduce BPA intake to prevent a number of illnesses or disorders;

• Alzheimers dementia
• Reproductive disorders
• Heart disease
• Obesity

So what is examples of BPA leaked food products, here are few but quite common;

• Canned coconut milk & cream: Inner lining of can contains BPA and fatty coconut milk and cream help to leak BPA into food content.
• Canned tomato: Tomato's acidity helps to leak BPA into food content.
• Canned soup: Commercially available soup is very salty (check label!) and high salt helps to leak BPA into food content.
• Some, not all, but plastics that are marked with recycle codes 3 or 7 may be made with BPA.

There are also few common things that we could do to leak more BPA into your food;

• Microwave polycarbonate plastic food containers. Polycarbonate is strong and durable but may break down from over use at high temperature.
• Water or other drink bottles stored for a long time in a warm condition and even room temperature.

We should then reduce the intake of canned food, use of plastic container (replacing with glassware) and only choose BPA free package or bottle. For young people, dementia seems to feel irrelevant but infertility would raise more of your interest?




According to a food industry's news, there is one company producing BPA free can in US but currently the supply is not available in UK. Here is one example of US company using BPA free can for their coconut milk and other products. We can buy in UK via online shop etc.

Hidden sugar in foods

Recently, a warning about excess sugar consumption was in the nationwide news. UK also sees an increase in obesity like US nowadays. The maximum sugar intake is stated about 50g/ day which is equivalent to 12 teaspoonful. This sounds a lot and you would think you are not eating that much, but we need to be aware that there are hidden sugar in many manufactured food products.

Watch out the labelling with these terms;

Honey, dextrose, fructose, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, sorbitol, fruit juice concentrate, galactose, lactose, polydextrose, mannitol, xylitol, maltodextrin, turbinado sugar

Example of food products with hidden sugar;

Breakfast cereals - even healthy looking cereals may contain quite lot of sugars.
Tomato sauce & Ketchup - sugar is commonly used to take acidity off from tomato flavour.
Yoghurt - sweet version may contain shocking amount of sugar. It is almost eating dessert!
Peanut butter - tasty one often contain quite lot of sugar.
Canned soup - both sugar and salt can be quite high.

So, the conclusion is....
We need to check the label before buying for those manufactured in the factories, for those not growing naturally!


Sugar can cause an addiction, and you know what, it can be harder to beat than smoking or drug using.

Kombu & Kefir - gentle digestion aid

As a Japanese person, I was familier using sea vegetable Kombu to cook legumes to make them more digestible (so that less bloating) but I just found out about Kefir to be used in a similar manner. It was advised to use kefir to soak wholegrain before cooking for baby's weaning foods. 

Kefir is cultured milk product and consumed in Eastern Europe and Russia. Have you seen a yogurt drink which has a tart taste in Turkish restaurant? It is compared with yogurt sometime but contains different types of beneficial bacteria than yogurt does. Kefir's bacteria can actually colonise the intestinal tract unlike yogurt, and also contains beneficial yeast too, which helps control and eliminate destructive yeast in the body. It sounds like kefir is quite superior than yogurt as a probiotic food. 

In the baby cooking book that I was reading, we only need small amount such as 1 teaspoon mixed with soaking water for 100g of wholegrain that make wholegrain more digestible for baby's digestive system. 

If anyone have a gentle tummy, it is worth adding kefir in the soaking water for wholegrain and legumes/ pulses (as well as drinking).

Why acne is formed - in the skin level

Acne can be considered as an disorder of pilosabaceous follicle which is attached to your hair follicle in the skin. There are numerous reasons could lead to a formation acne systematically but in the skin level, there are 4 main causes;

1. Plugs in the follicle caused by an excessive production of the horny layer (hyperkeratosis).
2. Increased sebum production by the sebaceous gland.
3. Bacteria within the follicle and the sebaceous gland.
4. Inflammation of the area around the sebaceous gland.

Environ products cover all area;

1. BHA (beta hydroxy acid) contained in Sebuprep & Sebuwash remove excess horny layer that block follicles. Particles of BHA are even smaller than AHA (alpha hydroxy acid).
2. Vitamin A contained in AVST Cream regulate the DNA's signalling to modulate sebum production.
3. BHA and tea tree extract contained in Sebuprep, Sebuwash or Sebugel-A reduce bacterial activity.
4. Colostrum contained in Colostrum Gel or Sebugel-A reduce an inflammation of the area by supporting skin's own defence power.

If above only does not work effectively then supplementation or diet change will definitely need to be looked at. It can take a time to combat adult onset acne, but please do not give it up!

2. AVST Cream に含まれているVitamin Aが皮脂の生産を調整する。
3. Sebuprep、Sebuwash、Sebugel-Aなどに含まれているBHAとtea tree成分がバクテリアの活動を抑えます。
4. Colostrum GelやSebugel-Aに含まれているColostrum（初乳成分）が炎症を毛穴の炎症を抑えます。

上のケアでも効果があまり見られない場合は、体内面のケアにも重点を置いて食事改善やサプリなどを取り入れる必要があるでしょう。大人のニキビは時間がかかるかもしれませんが、あきらめないで取りかかってみて下さい。

Food to focus - Goji Berry

Goji berry is now a standard item in the health food shop and a cupboard essential for those who cares about their health - but what is so special about it? Majority of goji berry come from China nowadays, but it had been known as an ancient Tibetan berry for the past many years. Goji berries contain 500 times more vitamin C by weight than oranges and are one of the most abundant source of carotenoids. They contain wide variety of amino acids and more iron than spinach - plus loaded with calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium and vitamin B & E. As you can imagine, those nutrients exert a high anti-oxidant property too - something like 7 times more powerful than blueberries. Goji Berries have a quite sweet flavour but fortunately their glycemic load is low. It is really a perfect snack option isn't it? One thing to care, but very importantly, is their pesticide residue. Unfortunately many cheap goji berry products sold in UK are non-organic and they are from China where pesticide issue is a quite big issue. I have an informaion from the food industry that when they tested many products commercially available in Europe, the result was quite shocking. Thus I would recommend to buy organic goji berry if possible, or buy health conscious brand's if it is not organic. I am sure such companies monitor pesticide level when they import them.

Peeling? or Vitamin A?

Peeling facial is a popular choice and there are also many cosmetic products containing AHA and other acid ingredients. It claims to improves radiance, sterlise and cleanse the skin and reduce lines and wrinkles. Have you thought peeling facial or product over your vitamin-A skin care? If you are not sure, do not drop your vitamin-A treatment because it is the essential nutrient for healthy skin. Body Oil contains vitamin A, C & E and excellent for skin rejuvenation including reversing already damaged skin. Hydrating Lotion contains AHA and other moisturising agent to help skin surface smoother and firmer. I love this product because it does really make your rough heels & knees softer. Regular pedicure with removing hard skin doesn't really solve the problem because they often grow back, but this does give a solution. Why don't we prepare for the next summer during this winter? The facial masque is very clever and multi-purpose, as it does cleanse the pores and hydrate your skin. It can be used as a normal mask (apply, leave then wash off) or as a leave on mask over night. You can just apply under your regular face cream before going to bed. Next morning when you wash your face, it cleans the skin really well. Body Oil はビタミンA、C、Eを含んでいてお肌を若々しくしてくれたり、既にダメージを受けた肌も再生してくれます。Hydrating LotionはAHAや保湿成分を含んでいて、お肌を滑らかにしてハリを出してくれます。これは私のお気に入りでもあって、膝やかかとなどの硬くなったお肌をつるつるにしてくれます。定期的にペディキュアをやっても頑固はかかとのハードスキンは戻ってきますよね。Hydrating Lotionは本当に結果の出るものなので、是非お試しを。冬の間の来夏の準備をするという手もありますね。Hydrating Exfolient Masqueは優秀なマスクで保湿もするし毛穴の汚れも同時にとってくれます。普通のマスクのように１５分後に洗い流すのでもいいですし、リーブオンマスクとして一晩おくと、次の朝顔を洗った時に汚れもすっきりします。普段のクリームの下に塗ってください。Pamper Packは小さいサイズなので旅行用に最適ですね。
